Applicants to the Ph.D. program in English should have either an undergraduate major in English or a related field or intensive study in the liberal arts with a solid background in literature in English, normally with a GPA of at least 3.5 (out of a 4.0 scale). The GRE exam is optional.
A statement of purpose for graduate study and three letters of recommendation are required, along with a writing sample in which an argument on a literary topic is sustained for about 15 pages. In roughly 1,000 words, the statement of purpose should outline the course of study the applicant seeks to pursue, including possible research interests and the èßäÊÓÆµapp faculty who might support that work.
